Thank you Yana-san for sending me more of these memorable photos from the magazines back in the 1990’s. \u00a0Every summer on Oahu, we’d do a photo shoot and I’d take my Japanese pro surfers to all the secret spots on the south shore. \u00a0This particular spot is very dangerous because there is dry reef sticking up in front of the wave. \u00a0If you don’t make it out of the barrel, you will hit the reef. \u00a0A huge gamble but always worth the photo. \u00a0 ![\"\"](\"https:\/\/go-naminori.com\/kirbyfukunaga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_7448.jpg\")

Top left: \u00a0Then once typhoon season started, I’d get a call and jump on the next flight to Japan. \u00a0We would surf the most protected and localized surf spots all over Japan. \u00a0The surf culture back then was “surf all day, party all night!” \u00a0The parties were so good that I can’t remember a single thing that happened. \u00a0Haha. \u00a0 \u00a0![\"\"](\"https:\/\/go-naminori.com\/kirbyfukunaga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_7451.jpg\")

After typhoon season ended, it was back home to Hawaii for me. \u00a0Any swell over 5′, I’d be at Backdoor getting barreled. \u00a0Any swell under 5′, I’d be at Rocky Point doing turns. \u00a0Life was so simple back then. \u00a0No cell phones, no internet, no social media, and no stress. \u00a0My job was to surf all day and party all night. \u00a0The best job in the world! \u00a0Those were the best years of my life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
