wow! the best call again! started early with Asayama-san because i knew the winds would come early. i told him, lets go surf first while it’s calm, and when the wind comes onshore, let’s go dive. because for diving, the winds don’t matter. it’s always calm under the surface. and today, it was just that.
so i take Asayama-san to my secret spot. we pull up and the waves are perfect! i tell him “today, you will be short boarding. we’ve been long boarding for the past 9 days so it’s time to do something different.” so i wax up my short board, give it to him, and he actually caught so many good waves! of course nobody was out so we had an awesome quiet surf session.
then it was time to free dive. last time i took Asayama-san, it was his first experience. ever since that, he wanted to go again. today was the perfect day. i pull up to some deep clean water, we mask up, jump in, and it was freaking so clear and beautiful!
before we got in, i told him “ok, go straight down, equalize the pressure by clearing your ears each meter you fall, then keep on falling. it was pretty deep and i didn’t think he would even try to touch the bottom.
then i seen him reaching and reaching and going deeper and deeper. omg, he touched the bottom!!! not too many people i’ve taught diving can go this deep in just 2 times.
then i told him, when you come up, just look up a little and enjoy the most beautiful view in the world. it will look and feel so amazing.
when Asayama-san surfaced, he had the biggest smile on his face. i told him “good job! now let’s go eat!” off to china town for some dim sum, and i’m sure he took a long nap in the afternoon. and i’m pretty sure when i pick him up tomorrow morning, he will ask me to take him diving again. he’s hooked! haha.
i think i’m going to start to become a free dive teacher and do lessons in hawaii. the reason being it’s so rewarding to see the smiles after what normal people think is impossible. here is a 67 year old guy living the dream life. surf, dive, eat, and laugh. that’s my dream life, and that’s a dream life so many people can only dream about. but now, those dreams can be real. you just have to dream it, and go for it!

The Amazing Glass Ceiling View!
Fresh Catch to Chinese Restaurant
spent the whole afternoon chasing fish. Hideki-san and Takahiro-san were super excited to get their first spear fishing experience in hawaii. the boys couldn’t wait!
they dove a few times in japan and speared fish. i told them, “hawaii is different. hawaii is much harder because the fish are much smarter.” and they found out pretty fast. but after a few tries, Takahiro-san finally speared one!
Kawai-san was in the water going up and down so many times. he has so much energy!
Hideki-san has a good approach to fish. very calm and very calculated. i was watching him for a while and decided to go off to the side and spear a fish for their dinner. i tried and tried but couldn’t find one. then i come back to the boat and see Hideki-san smiling! he freaking speared a big uhu!!! omg! i was so surprised!
isn’t it amazing how a kid can go catch himself dinner? i think that’s awesome. i’m still wondering where he found this fish hiding???
got a nice photo with father and son. i still can’t believe this kid speared it because there wasn’t any fish around there.
so i cleaned it for them because they were planning to eat at a chinese restaurant. now they get to eat the most freshest fish on the island. speared at 5pm and eaten shortly after. i’m sure it was awesome.
the ride back is always good when you succeed in spearfishing. want to thank this wonderful Kawai-san family for the amazing afternoon. hope to see you guys again! keep on spearing!
