when you’re far out at sea in the middle of the ocean, you have to be safe. we divers know that we’re in another world and even though we’re hunters, we can easily be prey. so when someone is diving down, you have to look all around and make sure he’s safe. in this case, Joshua was stalking a fish, then i looked behind him and out of the blue, i see an aggressive shark heading straight for him. i filmed the whole thing.
sharks are very curious so they will come right up to you. and if they mistaken you for a free meal, that’s how you get attacked. anyway, while Joshua was targeting a fish, the shark was targeting Joshua. so that’s when i calmly dive down and block the sharks path.
all i do is go in between the shark and Joshua and make sure it turns away. in this case, it turned away from Joshua and started coming towards me. it’s just being curious…
so now i’m the sharks target right? so i’m still making sure it doesn’t go near Joshua by staying underwater and poking it away. finally, it turns away and goes back down to the deep blue. then as i was coming back up, i see Kimo right behind me as he was watching my back. this is why divers have such a great bond. we look out for each other and our lives depends on each others. it’s pretty cool knowing family and friends are looking out for you…
anyway, this is another reason why i teach my students to always scan your surroundings both in and out of the water…
