16 years ago, i went on a boat trip to the Maldives. it was there i met Serizawa-san. we planned to be on the boat for 2 weeks but half way through the trip, something went wrong.
Serizawa-san was surfing and tore his knee ligament. he needed immediate medical assistance so we put him on a speedboat back to Male. then he got a medevac charter plane out of the country to the nearest hospital which was in Singapore. 
after the boat trip, i had a layover in Singapore to i went to visit him in the hospital. luckily Serizawa-san had travel insurance so the avoided the bills that probably cost tens of thousands of dollars. i know surfers who don’t get travel insurance and if something like this happens, you’re in trouble. ever since that trip, i pay the $39 for travel insurance everywhere i go. it’s worth the piece of mind…
in Bali, i get back from a surf and i hear someone call my name. OMG, it’s Serizawa-san!!!! 16 years later he’s still traveling the world and still surfing. he told me his knee was never the same since that accident but thankfully he can surf. good to see you brother!
