i was on the beach watching the Wyland Haleiwa Pro back in 1990. the big news of that contest was when Tom Curren paddled out with a mysterious yellow railed surfboard with no logos. everybody was shocked because he was the poster boy for his sponsors Ocean Pacific and Channel Islands. so this was big news to the surf community as that became the talk of the contest. come to find out, Maurice Cole shaped that board which turned out to be the most infamous surfboard in the history of surfing. Tom Curren won the World Title that year and Maurice Cole became instantly famous.
yes, this is the board and this photo happens to be the most iconic photo of Tom Curren ever.
so when i went to the Dove Factory earlier this month, i thought i’d share this to the world. Tokura-san is the biggest vintage surfboard collector in Japan. he’s been collecting vintage surfboards before everybody knew the meaning of vintage. so i wasn’t surprised at all seeing the most famous surfboard in the factory. Tokura-san is very good friends with Maurice Cole so that might have helped in the process of getting this board.
every single hard core surfer in the world knows this infamous surfboard.
signed by the 3x World Champion Tom Curren. this is priceless!!!
well, if you didn’t get to experience on of the most historic day in surfing history, watch this video of the Wyland Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa. i’ll never forget that day…
