As a surfer, it hurts a lot when you see something like this. A 100′ luxury yacht stuck on the pristine reef at one of the best surf spots in the world, Honolua Bay.
It’s not only destroying the reef, it’s also leaking toxic fluids into the beautiful marine sanctuary. They still don’t know how to remove the yacht but if they don’t do it before the next swell, it will get much more ugly than it already is. The locals of Maui are angry and you can’t blame them.
The sad thing is that this could have been prevented. The owners will probably end up paying millions in fines, but money doesn’t fix the reef.
My friend Mike Prickett sent me this photo he got from the Eddie. Not sure if he took it or one of his crew did, but I’m super grateful to have experienced a once in a lifetime event. I use to go the the Eddie events when Tony Moniz use to surf it. Joshua wasn’t even born yet so it’s so cool to see the next generations.
