Frozen Hawaii/Vietnam Poke Bowl?

10

Round 1:  OMG, the waves were so good this morning at Bowls.  It was still big and wild but if you caught the right one, you could get the best wave of your life out there.  There were some really nice barrels!

Barak exiting the barrel.  Another epic surf session with just a few surfers out.

Round 2:  I don’t want to say where this is because there were only 3 guys out today.  Everybody thought today would be too big for this spot but they were wrong, including me.  I couldn’t believe how perfect the rights and lefts were!!!  I’m hoping to go back there tomorrow and score again.

Nakahodo san is getting an experience of a lifetime.  Surfing different spots everyday will make a surfer stronger and wiser.  He sure came to Hawaii at the right time.

Nakahodo san loves poke bowls.  The new law in Hawaii that went into effect on July 1, 2026 requires stores to say where the tuna is from.  So I told him to check carefully before he buys one.  This one is frozen from Vietnam.  Can you see it on the label?

And this one was previously frozen from Indonesia.  Look at the small fine print.

So next time you buy poke or any kind of ahi/maguro in Hawaii, look at the label and see where it’s from.  But take a magnifying glass because it’s printed very small.  So if you’ve been eating poke in Hawaii all these years, there’s a big chance that you’ve been tricked.  The new law is to prevent that.  Anyway, if you ask a fisherman like me for my advice, I’d say to only buy fresh local tuna from Hawaii.  It’s a lot better.
