Hawaii Skin Diver Cover Shot….

good evening. the waves were pretty fun all day. the wind came onshore in the day but the sets were head high so it was all good. another great day in hawaii. more and more waves on the way!!!

hey guys, it’s out!!! the new HAWAII SKIN DIVER magazine. this was our timor, indonesia trip last fall and gosh, it seemed so long ago. but seeing these photos and reading the story made it feel like yesterday once more…. i took this cover photo of eric walker, who is an excellent diver from the virgin islands…

the first spread of the article is me coming back from spearing my biggest fish to date. imagine this beast coming straight for you? it was kind of scary….

they ran a big 9 page article and i was stoked to see so many of my photos in there. thanks HSD!!!

we were diving in some ripping current about 10-40′ deep at this secluded island. and island where indonesia militants gunshots were actually fired to our boat to get our attention. after paying them some money and giving them two coca cola’s, we got the permit to dive. i had my bigger gun when i shot a GT earlier. the fish took off with my spear in it. loosing a spear is like breaking a board. i was bummed. so i go back to the boat and grab my little 100cm andre gun. i told myself that i wouldn’t shoot a big fish with it because if i lost it, i would be done. no gun, no dive. so i’m swimming around in the shallow water as i see a shark approaching. the shark was maybe 6′ at the biggest. it swam right my me and behind it was a big shadow. i looked good and seen the GT swimming right behind the shark following it away from my. so i drop down to the reef and stir up some sand, the shark continued away but the GT turned around and came swimming up fast at a straight line to me. i said “shit!!” next thing you know, it was 6′ away and i was thinking if this thing was going to eat me. i had my gun pointed but didn’t want to take the shot. a million of things were running through my mind. then at 3′ away, he turned and i looked him in the eye, which was 5x bigger than mine. i pointed my little gun to his brain and “bam”….. he turned over and though he was dead. but i was wrong. he started kicking around and as i was getting tangled up in the line, travis came over and sank the kill shot. i stuck my little knife in the brain and the rest was history. look at that shot where my spear is going into his brain. any other place in the fish, he would have taken off and i would have lost the fish, along with my gun. it was a cool experience that i will never forget. free dive!! free surf!!! what a life…..
