JUNE 28, 2009 HONOLULU NEWS —
“The Navy said it has reattached almost 5,400 coral colonies damaged when a warship ran aground on a reef off Oahu in February.
It’s also removed some 250 cubic yards of rubble to prevent surf from knocking the debris into remaining coral colonies and causing further damage.
The Navy has spent $7 million to stabilize the reef. The U.S. Pacific Fleet said Friday this is the largest and most expensive reef stabilization project ever undertaken by the Navy.”
**so here’s what happened.
-the captain got fired and will probably never ever drive a ship again.
-$40,000,000 damage to the navy warship.
-so far, $7,000,000 cost into trying to fix the reef.
-smashed reef from ships that run aground: PRICELESS….
***just wanted to thank everybody that sent me emails about the reef. kyle, ryo, and i stuck our necks out to try expose the story to the world. since then, i’ve been getting so many emails from news organizations, like tv, and newspaper. i refused any interviews after our story aired on tv and i still refuse to. so please don’t send me any more asking for interviews and stuff because i won’t do it. i think the 3 of us little guys did enough to keep the public aware of such disasters and the navy has since taken responsibility for their actions. i respect that and what’s done is done. it’s time to move on and just hope my dive spots return within the next 100 years.
