good morning. oh my gosh! i’ve been in japan for the last 18 years searching for an amasan. i seen a show on amasan’s or abalone divers on soko ga shiritai 20 years ago and since then, i’ve always wanted to meet one. well, my dream finally came true yesterday. it took a long time but it was worth the wait…..
imagine going diving with grandma’s in their 80’s? and imagine them holding their breath longer than you? and imagine they use no fins and snorkel? well, you don’t have to imagine anymore. we were filming an upcoming show for hawaii skin diver tv and when you see it, it will freaking blow your mind. meeting them opened my eyes again. yeah, it made me think that when i turn 80 years old, i want to be energetic and happy like them. after spending a day with them and asking all kinds of questions, i figured out the answer of happiness. the answer is? the ocean…..
i wish i can say more about this dive but i shouldn’t. all i have to say is that i’m the happiest guy on earth now. what i experienced yesterday is something that not too many people can experience in their lifetime. check out all the abalone and shell fish we will be eating tonight. itadakimasu!!!
i wanted to thank a few people for making this happen. thank you to kimura-san for helping me out on setting up this dream trip. thank you kyle nakamoto for documenting this rare experience, and thank you sumie-san for putting the last piece of the puzzle together. sumie-san grew up in this super local fishing village and if it wasn’t for his kind hospitality, this would have been impossible. i’m so happy to see such awesome team work make dreams come true….
**and before i go, i wanted to say that we also visited taiji yesterday. it’s the place where the filmed “the cove” and the place people around the world hate because of the dolphin killings. all i have to say is that you only heard one side of the story. after meeting and talking to people in the city, i’ve come up with my opinion. an opinion i will voice shortly. just keep posted…..
