when ever i’m free diving and see a shark, i don’t panic, i actually get curious because sometimes there is a big ULUA or “GT” swimming right behind it. if you want it, you have to go get it. but be prepared for the outcome. the shark could turn on you, or your fish, or the fish strapped on your waist. usually when i’m in a situation like this, i look to see if the shark is agitated or not. if the shark is looking hungry or curious, i let it go. but if i have the chance to take out the GT, i’ll take it…..
so there we were in molokai where there are lots of big sharks, and big fish. i drop down and sit on the bottom waiting for something big i seen swim in a hole. i didn’t know what it was but i just waited and waited because i knew it was going to swim back out at me. then i see a big shadow coming right at me. shit!! a shark!! i was going to start swimming up but i seen another big shadow swimming behind and i knew it wasn’t another shark because i’ve never seen 2 sharks swimming together before. then there it was, a nice size GT. i wait patiently and let the shark swim to the left side of me. i was staring it in eye with my left as my right eye took aim at the GT. i had my small gun so i had to get the kill shot. BANG!! got it. the perfect kill shot and the GT was instantly dead…..
toda-san was swimming right above me watching the whole thing. it’s amazing how he took this amazing photo. look at the 8′ shark closely. see that shadow on the bottom left? that’s the GT….
i was down for a while so after i shot the fish, i started looking up at the surface to see how much more i had. i was a long way to the top and as i was fighting the fish on my spear, i felt a little jerk and then nothing was there. i looked back down at my spear and the GT was gone. shit!!! we looked around for it in every hole around. i knew it couldn’t swim far away because it was pretty much dead. we couldn’t find it and now i have a feeling where it went. yeah, right into the sharks jaws. yeah, the shark must have ate it in one bite. oh well, that’s the way it goes….
**wanted to thank toda-san for the awesome photos….
