i took a gamble. the waves were tiny in the morning but i had to go out to the north shore for a job anyway so i left early. the wind stayed perfect until 11am and the waves were coming up. it couldn’t have a been anymore beautiful than this morning. i surfed early in the morning with sunny garcia and ross williams. super fun to share waves and old time stories. then i came in to work. check out the shots!
some of the kids were out doing the live air show! it’s so exciting to watch the surfing now days because the kids are flying higher and higher every season.
stoked to see these 2 former JPSA champions out there today. Izuki Tanaka and Teppei Tajima.
i got some unreal shots of Teppei that i will keep on the side for something special. too good to show now. he was surfing really good!
from diving yesterday with joshua, to shooting him today. this is one of the biggest 16 year old kids in hawaii. and when you are a big kid, you can do big turns with big spray. this is power surfing, grom style.
confidence is everything. josh has 100% confidence and you can see it in his surfing, and diving.
this is where you have to keep your front knee bent and extend your back leg. the key to throwing big spray and being in control of your surfboard.
boom! see that 7′ spray? nice!
then keep low and complete the turn. to me, josh was surfing the best today out there. but everyday another kid will step up and take over. that’s surfing and i can’t wait to go back out there tomorrow!
the surfing boom days, there would be 200 photographers on the beach. today, there were only a few. so to get the special shot takes a lot more time and effort in the water. in other words, if you are an aspiring surfer, you have to work overtime to get the job done. and the kids that are doing that are getting rewarded.
pretty shick speed blur of Kaimana Jaquias. this is Kaipo’s kid. good surfer, good style, and good father.
