good morning. waves up on the north shore. not the best conditions but good enough. i’m out of here!!! have a nice day..
this was yesterday morning dive dawn patrol check on the east side. too dark to see….
10 min later, there’s the light!!! i knew it was going to be a good day…
when i go diving, i triple check to make sure i have everything. every piece of equipment is essential…
this is former national spear fishing champion wade hayashi. when he pulled up in the morning at the pier with kyle and i was stoked. going diving with wade hayashi is like going surfing with kelly slater. as soon as he hit the water, i got out my imaginary pen and paper and took notes. i watched every one of this champions moves. from equipment, to the decent, to the bottom time, to the hunting skills, to the accent, and to the cooler box. what i learned in yesterdays dive would take years for a normal person. but the thing i learned the most was i’m still in preschool compared to wade. well maybe after yesterday, i moved to 1st grade. i love to learn, i want to get better, and the only way to do that is to dive with good divers. thanks kyle for inviting us on another red sea ocean adventure…. let’s do it again, and again, and again…
hayato won’t be sleeping well for a long time. if you see him staring into the sky, looking the other way when your talking to him, or see him talking to himself, here’s the reason. hayato hasn’t speared a big GT yet and it’s every divers dream. yesterday, he had his golden chance. wade called it a 60 lbs. ulua in a cave, i call it more like 80-100 lbs. the beast was in the hole and all hayato had to do was spear it. first try? speared it with his gun and the shaft bounced off the fish. the fish swims away into another hole. i let him use my big gun and all he had to do was hit the fish anywhere and he would have brought back sashimi for every japanese on the north shore. what happened? ask hayato…
i took this photo of hayato at the boat ramp holding “the fish that got away.” kyle, wade, and i were laughing because we all know that feeling. it’s a shitty feeling but that’s what makes us want to dive more and more and when that golden day comes, it will be all that much better. hayato’s day will come and i hope i’m there to see it…. but for now, hayato will be “SLEEPLESS IN HAWAII”….
