yesterday was amazing! came home and got an email from Maki-san of the photos she took. omg, i wish i had my underwater camera too! check out some of her awesome photos!
it was early in the morning and the dolphins must have just gotten up too. every morning, they come from the west heading east. then in the evenings, they the go from east to west. pretty much a daily routine.
yeah, so close you can almost touch them. nice shots Maki-san!
see the black fish? that is called “kole” and hawaiians love that fish. you clean it, dip it in flour, and deep fry it. the best fried fish in hawaii! and see the 2 red fish? it’s called “menpachi” andyou can deep fry it, steam it, or nitsuke it. all good! and see that big red fish? that is called an “uhu” and stuffing it with mayonnaise is the best for that.
on my first free dive, i spear the uhu. i clean the guts in the water because i didn’t want to stink up the cooler. then on my next drop, i see this pretty big shark coming in from the side. he’s hunting as he had jerky motions. he disappears so i go down stalking a fish. then over my shoulder he comes. when a shark is bigger than you, it’s time to get out of the water.
i ask Maki-san to come in. she looked at me and gave me the face of “are you crazy?” i grab her camera and take a few photos. i was in his world!
and last, this 18 year old high school kid was fishing at mokulea this past weekend. his fishing line got caught to the reef so he paddled out his kayak to try to untangle it. the waves were rough so his kayak tipped over and was never to be seen again. they found a part of his surf trunks and spotted 2 tiger sharks nearby. 4 days of searching, his body wasn’t found and they called off the search. what a sad story.
