i was reading the Hawaii Skin Diver magazine the other day and came across this interesting article. this free diver named Sheri Daye wrote an article about the dangers of free diving. Shallow Water Blackout has takes so many lives of the best free divers around the world, including hawaiians. this subject is not often talked about but after reading the article, i think we should pay more attention to it. shallow water blackout happens all the time. i can recall feeling the symptoms many of times but was lucky to regain conscious on my own. ever woke up under water? i guess i’m lucky. for the divers who don’t wake up or don’t get help, death is the outcome. they started having courses and classes about safety diving and the next time i get a chance, i’m going. it might help me save another divers life, and also might help me save my own life….
if you catch your buddy in time, the chances are great for recovery. if your too late, better think on how your going to tell your buddy’s family the bad news…
this is what too look for. shallow water blackout usually happens when the diver is coming up to take a breath after a long dive. he can either black out on the last 10′ of accent, or he can black out in the first 30 seconds of resurfacing. so if you see your dive buddy looking like this and sinking into the deep blue, he’s in trouble….
while in timor, we were talking about shallow water blackout. kekoa told me he blacked out 2x and was lucky his buddy saved him. and he also told his friend to shoot him in the fin with his gun if he’s too deep to get him. that’s a great idea. but i told kekoa and all my friends that if i black out and am falling into the deep blue ocean, please shoot me in my left leg. why? because my fins are loose so if you shoot my fin, it will probably come off. so shoot me in my left leg because my right leg is a lot more important. i want to still be able to drive, and i want to still be able to push an off the lip….
diving is dangerous and i think because of the depths we’re going these days, we’d all better watch out for each other. after reading that article, i’m going to be more aware of my surroundings for sure…. great article Sheri Daye and Hawaii Skin Diver magazine. i’m sure you already saved some lives….
