a lot of kids are doing airs and getting the photos, but not too many actually make them. that will separate the good surfers from the average surfers because judges don’t score incomplete maneuvers. 2 days ago, i shot rocky point and one kid really stood out. he would try these huge airs and actually make them. nobody knew who the heck he was. but now, the big suspense is over….
meet Keoni Ryota Yan. Keoni is 15 years old and has a chinese/tahitian father and japanese mother. born in hawaii and lives in tahiti. he’s on the quiksilver team and is one of their unknown top guns. what i like about this kid is that i saw some raw talent in his surfing. super confident in the water and super confident in his surfing. he came out and said hi to me, which i thought was cool. i don’t know who the heck he was, and he don’t know me for sure. a little of aloha from the tahiti/hawaii connection.
i asked in a previous blog if anybody knows who this kid is. usually people respond to questions i ask but nobody did until just now so i’m guessing that keoni is an underground young gun. with this kids talent, i’m sure he will be well know very soon. as i’m typing this blog, i already have in my mind a go-naminori interview. want to know more about keoni? i sure do….
