**surfing my whole life has it’s perks. one of them is watching kids grow up. i’m going to talk about 2 great kids both in the water, and out of the water. one is Shun Murakami, and the other is Seth Moniz.
Shun Murakami’s surfing impresses me. fast, fluid, and quick. shun has the ability of putting in 2 turns on a wave while his competitors do one. last summer, shun came to hawaii and impressed the judges so much that everybody was asking “who’s that japanese kid?” i met shun around 4 years ago. he was a little kid that kept on smiling. really quiet, and extremely respectful to others. by watching shun’s manners, i learned how to say a simple “thank you” for everything. i will never forget him sitting in the back seat of my car and everywhere we go, he would say “thank you” before we got out. shun’s 14 years old now and i’m going to have to be his bodyguard to keep the girls away from him. i don’t want anything, or anybody getting in this kids way of becoming a japanese champion! Go-Shun!
before i talk about Seth Moniz, let me talk to you about this photo. i took this last summer at kewalo’s and was going to keep it for a magazine shot. sorry, i couldn’t wait. every time i look at it, i think to myself, “nobody has more determination than this kid.” seth puts everything into every turn. maybe that’s why he’s winning every event he enters? he has a winning streak probably longer than kelly slaters. he’s taken down the best in the world and came up #1 last year in puerto rico. i use to carry seth, i use to sing the ABC’s with seth, i use to babysit seth, and i use to pinch his little cute cheeks. now he’s a big boy with big dreams. and all i can so as an uncle is stand on the side and watch this kid go to the top of the world where he belongs. seth is only 13 years old and if he doesn’t get sidetracked in the girlfriend thing, he will be world champion someday. and i’m willing to bet anyone on that!
**the super cool thing about these kids is they have the same surfboard sponsor as me. yeah, TSSC Surfboards has been supporting them for years now. Matchi has been shaping their boards and the kids have been ripping. matchi spends days in and days out designing boards that will suit these rapidly growing kids. TSSC’S motto is “A MAGIC BOARD WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.” i think it has changed 3 already! thank you Yassan and Matchi for all the years of support.
