was writing a diary along the way. forgot to post Day 2. here it is.
Cuba Day 2: City Tour
i had a hard time sleeping in a big apartment that would be mine for the next 4 days. managed to finally roll out of bed at 8:30am. went to the central bus station and decided to get a city bus around a city i had no idea about. totally blown away by all the old cars speeding and letting out intoxicated smoke running along the roads. old school fords, chevys, buicks, and cars that you won’t ever see on the roads anywhere else in the world. it’s 2015 and besides the cars, there is nothing american here in cuba. it’s a very slow pace lifestyle as i sit on the curb of the main road just watching american cars from the 40’s and 50’s roll on by. i felt like i was in a movie or something. and the closest movie i can think of is “The Godfather.”
later that night, i pull into a bar and sit down to cool off with a beer. ended up talking to a guy next to me. he introduce himself as a mexican. i introduce myself as an american. we had a few drinks and started to get to know each other well. then he looked at me and said “you american’s are fucked!” i said “i know.” we talked about how american ruined other countries and now they are about to ruin Cuba. he saw first hand how american ruined mexico and now they are going to ruin Cuba. i explained the good and the bads. and the bads far outweighing the goods. i’ve been meeting so many backpackers from other countries and they over express their feelings to me. they all feel that American tries to rule the world. they say that American sticks their noses in other countries businesses just for their own interests. American is all about oil, war, and world control. it’s so heavy how i can sit there and listen to their opinions. 10 years ago i would have gotten into a fight if someone talked shit about my country. but now, i understand that everyone has their own opinion. and i can also see it from the other side.
oh, one thing the mexican hated the most about America was Donald Trump. haha. i wonder why?
we ended up drinking 5 beers, couple mojitos, and a few rum and cokes. all Cubian of course as you won’t find anything american here yet. yet meaning now. but we can all agree that in a few years there will be Budweisers, McDonalds, Starbucks, Subways, and everything else here. to tell you the truth, that sucks.
here was the alley where my apartment was. walking down there alone late at night was creepy. my mexican friend told me “brah, if this was mexico city, you would be dead!”
the living room and kitchen of my apartment.
my bed. pretty comfortable and very clean. cost me $35/night.
and my bathroom.
i asked the owner where a good cheap restaurant is. he drew me a map, i walked there in 20 minutes, and this is where i ate most of my meals.
fried chicken plate for $3.95. so crispy, so delicious, and so cheap!
kind of fine dining style with super cheap prices. i felt rich! haha.
Cristal beer is Cuban beer. $1.50 and good. light and smooth.
then if you want something stronger, the Bucanero is the way to go. little darker and stronger.
5.4% alcohol. a couple of these and a couple of mojitos and you’re feeling pretty dam good.
it’s the first time i traveled to another country and didn’t see a Coca-Cola. instead, they have the Cuban version of coke which is called Tukola. it was pretty good!
