woke up early this morning and checked out the fishing and surfing report. called up Takahashi-san and headed to the harbor.
took a cooler full of ice just in case we caught the big one!
headed to Molokai.
on the way, i was checking the surf and explained to Takahashi-san, “ok, here’s what we can do. we can either go surf, or we can go fish. the waves are super perfect and nobody will be out at my secret spot. or we can go head to molokai and let out the fishing lines. OR, we can catch a couple of waves, then go fish.” that was the call! we ended up catching a few waves, then more, then more, and many more. omg, the waves were super good and we were very happy surfers! time flew and when we got back to Mayuki, it was already lunch time.
and omg, it was picture perfect. seen so many whales all over the place.
one came right up to Mayuki. the closest you will ever get to a whale. it was weird how it was so far away and then made a sharp turn right to us. it was mother and her baby.
i still can’t believe how beautiful the weather has been this year. crazy beautiful.
we’re in full whale season now so if you know where to look, you can have an amazing encounter. i’m still looking for my opportunity to swim with them. hopefully soon. hopefully tomorrow.
Takahashi-san paddles back out after ever wave and says, “i’m so happy!” i was watching him catch wave after wave after wave. he was ripping today! in fact, it was the best and most waves i’ve ever seen him catch. we ended up surfing so long that we totally forgot about fishing. haha. i guess you can say we are surfers. surf first, and everything comes after.
as we head back to the harbor, Takahashi-san tells me “you have a good life.” i told him “yeah, all those years back in okinawa when you use to take me surfing and diving on your boat, i always thought “i want to do the same thing in hawaii. so now i’m living a dream, the same dream you are living. thank you for that!”
