when ever i go to molokai, i get well taken care of. it’s like family, uncles, brothers, cousins, and friends. this time, cousin Dino put me up right on the beach in front of his house because his house was full with the boys. so i pretty much scored!
20 steps and i’m on the beach. super outdoor and super private. here is my toilet and shower. imagine listening to the sound of the waves and birds while using the toilet. so amazing.
and these hot tubs to go along with it. i felt like i was in paradise. opps, i was in paradise.
i’m sleeping in on the first morning. then i hear somebody yelling, “Kirby, we go to the mountain!” i wake up, walk outside, and cousin Jimmy is inviting me to the mountains with him.
Jimmy is one of the brothers of the Naki Family. a super experienced hunter and diver. whether in the mountains or ocean, he knows everything. so i was so excited to go hunting with him. i just got out of bed and didn’t even have water or breakfast. then ended up hiking up and down tall mountains for 4 hours. i thought i was going to black out. haha.
Jimmy said “just follow me.” and that’s what i did all morning long. it was amazing to stalk our prey, which was deer. and i was fascinated by his hunting skills.
when you’re in the mountains, it’s every man for himself. i had a hard time keeping up, but i never came close to giving up.
when i go hunting with experienced locals, i watch every single one of their moves. things like this you could never learn in a book. it’s all about hands on experience. and that’s what i like.
passing by many juicy mango, avocado, and lychee trees full of fruit. i asked Jimmy, “hey, can i stop for a little while and eat breakfast?” i couldn’t see all these lychee go to waste.
i was so happy i finally got to eat some breakfast! i sucked lychee after lychee until i was totally satisfied.
and i brought some down the mountain for the boys.
then it was back to business. i learned so much in this 4 hours of hunting. the most important thing was, “buy proper hunting shoes.” haha. my tennis shoes ripped apart in the first 30 minutes.
then hit a coconut tree on the way down. just enough for my fresh coconut water in the morning.
this is how people live on Molokai. they hunt and eat resources from mother nature. and if you know how, you will never ever starve.
lychee, macadamia nuts, coconuts, mangos, and bananas. my free breakfast every morning. it’s like a dream for me to live off the land like this. and this was also the first time in 15 years that i didn’t even touch a computer for 3 days straight. makes me think about retiring from the computer for a year or so. i felt so free!
