ever since i got a boat, my dream was to have one of these honda 4 stroke motors on it. why? because it’s reliable, gas is much cheaper, and i can drive it over to molokai. so i’ve been putting aside beer money for the past 15 years and saving up for my dream. last year, i finally had almost enough saved so i started looking around. one of these motors cost $8,000 brand new. i was just about to order one over the phone when i decided to take a last look on the online classified ads. i type in 50 hp honda 4 stroke and guess what pops up?
not just a new 2010 honda motor, but it was attached to a boat almost identical to mine. only much newer and much cleaner. i call the guy as he was asking $12,000 for the boat and motor. he told me that i can take it all for $10,000. wait! i don’t have that kind of money. so i clean up my boat and get it ready to sell so i can save up more money. the guy calls me back a few days later and says “hey kirby, do you still want my boat?” i say yes, but i have to sell my boat first. he says “how much would you pay to come get it now?” i say $7,000. he says, “come get it.” i fly down my hill, buy the boat, and stick it in my garage.
one week later, i sell my boat for $3,500. if you can do basic math, how much money did i spend for a new motor with a better boat? yes, $3,500. so instead of almost spending $8,000 for just a new motor, i got a new boat with a new motor for $3,500. now i will save on gas, i will save on oil, and i will go to molokai anytime i want to. oh, and now my dream also came true for less than half price.
so the next calm day when the waves are small, you won’t see me at bowls, you will see a tiny boat flying to molokai. spear fish, pick shells, and camp on the beach where there is no soul around. i cant’ wait!
