good morning and happy new year! had an amazing start to the new year already. photos of that coming soon. but first, this what happened yesterday, or should i say, last year.
Kaneko-san and Ray-kun wanted to surf the north shore. so that’s where we went!
Masaru-san, Hiyo-kun, and Manami-chan wanted to surf the north shore too. it was their first time on the short board, and first time to the north shore.
i was super surprised to see Ray-kun surfing so good! super smooth and nice lines.
haleiwa as super fun. Kaneko-san taking off as Masaru-san paddles out. this is family surfing day.
Masaru-san on a few good ones. backside attack!
Manami-chan on her first north shore wave. look at that smile!
and the paddle back out is always amazing after you catch a good wave.
Hiyo-kun on his first short board experience too. he did great!
great wave, great smile.
then the boys wanted something bigger and challenging so we went to much bigger and much more challenging laniakea. i was so stoked to see Kaneko-san catch so many good waves on his new 6’4.
good to see friends out in the lineup. here is Hiroshi on a nice one.
of course i had to catch some too. there is no way i would let a wave pass me up on the north shore.
Ray-kun was super nervous in the beginning and wasn’t catching too many waves. so i told him “hey, if i say go, you just go. i don’t care if you fall, just get back up and keep on trying.” then one of the biggest sets of the day rolls in, i yell “go, go, go!!!” Ray-kun turns around and paddles into one of the best waves of the day. when he paddled back out, i seen the biggest smile of happiness in this kids face.
then we went in and starting talking all about our wonderful session on the last day of 2016. a day we will remember forever.
then as we left the north shore, i told the boys “hey, it’s ok to sleep. i know the adrenaline took so much out of you guys. i was once there. you guys did a great job so it’s time to relax!” two minutes later, father and son were sleeping like babies. haha. as for me, i was happy to be a part of that amazing day of surfing and family bonding. i was smiling all the way home! an awesome way to end an awesome year. good bye 2016 and hello 2017!
