i don’t only teach surfing, i teach kids how to drive. it’s a long process of begin a kid, to getting a permit, to getting a license. in Hawaii, you can drive at 15 years old and i still remember getting my permit on my 15th birthday and driving home. so when the opportunity comes for a new 15 year old to get a license, i’m helping out. first stop is the City and County Driver’s License office.
i choose the one on the East Side because it’s super country and super empty.
the wait in line is a few minutes compared to a few hours in the office in Honolulu.
first thing is to go fill out the application.
and make sure you check the box. Carissa Moore will help you out.
it takes less than 5 minutes to fill out the application.
then you wait in line to take the written test.
make sure you have all the paperwork with you. you need identification and BOTH parents. whether you’re married, divorced, fighting, or missing. a child won’t be able to get a drivers license without BOTH parents signing the paper.
then enter the classroom and you can have all the time you want. usually takes 20 minutes to finish the test. and you’re allowed to get 6 wrong out of 30 questions.
then once you pass, say “cheese” and get your driving permit. practice, then go back 6 months later to get your drivers license. it’s that easy here in Hawaii. i want to congratulate this young woman on passing her test, and want to congratulate her to the next step of FREEDOM!
by the way, the written exam costs $2. and the permit costs $5. i’m not joking, it’s that cheap!
