i’ve been staying on the north shore of hawaii in november, december, january, and february ever since i started surfing. haven’t traveled these months because the north shore is where all the action is. my mind was too focused on getting barrels at backdoor and trying to get that “cover shot” photo. yes, it’s a part of my job and since published magazines are fading out, getting “that shot” is not so important anymore. yes, i love to surf big waves and get big barrels, but it’s time to move on and explore other places during these months. it’s time to break out of the mold. i already have a trip set up for january, but what about february? when ever i need some info about surf destinations, i don’t search online, i just ask my friends around the world.
i’ve known world photographer/traveler/journalist john callahan since 1988. john and i go way back and have discovered world class waves on our voyages. from death defying waves in the philippines, to perfect blue barrels in new caledonia, to new discoveries in the maldives, we’ve been there. callahan’s photos always amaze me. the color, the angle, and the professionalism.
i asked callahan where’s the good surf spots in feb and the response was immediate. PH is philippines.
my concept for surfing has totally changed. i’ll surf a knee high onshore wave to a 20′ closeout and i’ll still have fun. just being in the ocean is where i want to be and what ever it has to offer on that given day, i’ll take it. i’m so excited on traveling, i’m so excited on exploring, and i’m so excited on what’s ahead. all i need is 1 surfboard, 1 camera, and 1 speargun so i can surf, document, and eat.
