photography is fun. it’s super cool to look back into my photo library and see all the photos i’ve taken throughout the years. i started off being the “Say CHEEEEESE” photographer. i mean, taking posing shots. i wouldn’t snap a photo unless the subject was looking straight at me. i never liked that style but didn’t know any better.
5 years ago, i started to experiment. started to shoot differently. i strayed away from those posing shots and wanted to capture “The Moment.” i think that the moment is what matters. it’s the time, the energy, and the second.
every photo has a story. this is “The Moment” taken by Shinsuke Matsukawa. kimura-san and i go back about 13 years. from day one, he took me in. made me feel at home, made me feel part of his family, and made me feel so comfortable. through out the years, we’ve become closer through traveling, surfing, and beers. on my last trip to wakayama, we were sitting on the sea wall after surfing a perfect day. i was really surprised when matsu sent me this photo. i looked at it good and didn’t realize how happy i am. i couldn’t be in a better place now. to be able to travel the world, surf with my friends, and make new friends is a life people would kill for. i wouldn’t trade my great life for anything.
this is pretty personal but before my grandpa osaki passed away 4 years ago, his last words to me were “Kirby, I lived a great life.” since then, i’ve been on a mission to live the greatest life possible. it’s for him, it’s for me, and it’s for everybody around me. i live a dangerous lifestyle and if i die tomorrow, i want everybody to know, “I lived a great life.” that’s why i live everyday as it’s my last. hope you all do too!
