Belonging in Cuba

traveling to Cuba alone was probably the scariest backpacking trip of my life.  no cel service, no internet, or no ways of communication.  i just went and went with the flow.  and since it was closed to Americans when i went, i had to go through Mexico to get there.

i was reading a tip on traveling.  it says “if you are traveling- especially if you are in an unknown area- try to look like you belong.  you are less likely to be mugged.  Also, walk confidently.”  this is good advice because this is exactly how i’ve been traveling for the past 30 years.

back to Cuba.  walking down alleys like this, you better not look like a tourist or you will get mugged.

i tried so many different things there.  this Cuban beer was so good!

and this Cuban cola wasn’t the best.  i prefer coke.

once again, walking down dark alleys by yourself, you better walk with confidence.  even though i was super scared, you would have never known.

then i started hanging around Cubans so i felt very safe.  these guys were so funny!

and walking back to my room late at night was pretty scary.  i wasn’t walking with confidence, i was running with confidence.  haha.

Cuba was a country that i only wanted to visit once in my lifetime.  so i tried to do and see as much as possible each day i was there.  and since i love the ocean, i went to this beautiful beach.  a definite highlight of my trip…

South Shore Fever!!!

Good morning 4am.
North shore 2-4′ and coming up. Clean.
Ala Moana chest high and bumpy onshore.
Diamond Head shoulder high and junky.
South winds at 20mph.
Sunny and warm. Rain is coming.
Going to the sea.
Have a wonderful day!

Preparation…

there was a super cool storm that came through Diamond Head  early this morning.  i was watching natures free show!

it rained hard, then the sun came shining out.  it was so beautiful!

i came in and when i looked back at the ocean, i told myself “i gotta come back.”  so i went back this afternoon and it was even better.

then i came home and mounted fire extinguishers all around my Mom’s house and our houses.  i feel a little safer now…
