A Family Tradition…

since i was a little boy, every time i left my grandparents house, my grandpa and grandma would put a hawaiian sun juice in a plastic bag for me to take home. they would do it for my brothers and sister too. even to this day!!! i use to refuse taking it home because i didn’t want my grandparents to have to go out and buy more because it was heavy. but these days, i take it with a smile on my face. i know that my grandpa really wants to give it to me, and also wants to keep the family tradition alive. and that’s more important to me…

this is my last living grandparent. grandpa fukunaga is 91 years old. he’s really energetic and healthy. grandpa’s been there for us since we were born and still is. every time i go to his house, we talk about mt. fuji, japanese culture, WWII, and the hardships they had as second generation japanese/american citizens. he has almost a decade of experience and i want to know everything about it. next time i see grandpa, i’m going to ask him about my roots. i’m going to start by getting my great grandparents names and cities where they were born. i’m looking forward to that….

now days, leaving my grandpa’s house is hard for me. i remember looking at the wonderful garden of plants and flowers my grandma planted. then as i jumped into my car, i remember seeing my grandpa and grandma waving goodbye to me until my car is far down the street. now it’s only grandpa waving goodbye and once i turn the corner, i can’t hold back my tears… ahh.. this is too hard, i better stop….

STJ: MIyazaki

good morning. chest/shoulder high waves around the island. bowls, ala moana, and even laniakea looking super fun. i surfed diamond head yesterday and it was overhead and good. my board is working good so i want to surf any kind of wave. oh, it’s rainy season in japan so that means the heavy rain is taking all the rocks off the beach forming epic sandbar banks. i already got a few reports and my bags are packed and ready. come next typhoon, i’ll probably be on an airplane. keep me posted and i’ll keep you posted. have a nice day!!!

this article we did for surf trip journal magazine seemed so long ago, but was only last year. imagine hanging out in miyazaki with locals satoshi kubota and maoh toda, photographer u-ske, and editor susumu nakano-san. it was only for a few days but we had fun! if you ask any of the 5 of us about our job, i think we’d all have the same answer. “SAIKO!!!” which means in english, “AWESOME!!!”

i remember driving up the mountain on the main road, then taking narrow side road that lead down a steep hill. there were bushes on both sides scratching our car, everything was green, everything was wild, then when we get to the bottom, there was one of the most beautiful bay i’ve ever seen. clean water, white sand, mountain backdrop, and fun perfect little waves. gosh, i want to go to miyazaki again….

i was down at maui sporting goods in kapahulu checking out guns. there is a brand named beuchat and there are so many different models so i was asking wendell ko the differences. the low price range guns start out as low as $100, and the high end ones up to $800. it all depends on the level of your diving but if you wanted to ask me what gun i would pick if i could only choose one, it would be the 105 cm beuchat marlin competition. why? because you can spear small reef fish and if your lucky, you can also spear big fish. you just better be ready to hang on for the ride….
**hey, if you ever need advise on guns, go down to maui sporting goods on kapahulu avenue and ask for wendell or kurt. they are both experienced spear fishermen that know everything. that’s what i do…. here’s their phone number: 808-735-3897. and tell them i said hi….

Crocs vs. Sharks

good evening. surfed 2 rounds today. one at kewalo’s and one at diamond head. super fun waves!!! not i’m so hungry!!! have a great evening….

check out this amazing photo. a bull shark swam into crocodile infested water and guess what happened? he was lunch. it’s the first time i’ve heard or even seen something like this. isn’t nature freaking amazing?

by brothers friend has a pretty nice harley davidson. when ever he parks it outside of my house, i just stare at it. i’m really getting tempted and actually took some time the other day to look for one online. but after 10 minutes, i slapped myself in the head and said “stop!” gosh, i don’t have time for that…

and last, this might look like a cool photo when you first glance at it. but look good. this is a poor wave in our poor ocean that’s contaminated with oil. imagine your local surf break like that. it could happen any time any day. so enjoy the ocean, take care of it, and it will take care of you…
