JAL: Black List

good morning. wow, looks like we have another south swell. bowls is looking head high and really good. i got up at 2 am, then 3 am, then now at 6 am. i’m still tired but jumping in the water might fix me up. see you out there…

check out this cool photo that segawa-san sent me. this is somewhere in izu. hey, do you think i can go free dive there this summer?

wanted to say hello to jon from seattle. yeah, what a freakin small world. you know uncle roy? that’s cool. maybe see you on a future red sea adventure tour.

hey, why am i on the Japan Airlines black list? i get hassled everywhere i go. is it because i’m a surfer? yes!
so there i was leaving Kuala Lumpur airport in malaysia a few days ago. i go to the check in counter with my suitcase in one hand, and spearguns wrapped into my board bag in the other. i go to the counter with a smile on my face because i know that 2 flights will take me home. as i put my bags on the scale, they JAL staff starts to feel my bag. he asks me if there is a surfboard in there. i told him no because there really wasn’t one in there. i told him that it’s just my fishing poles. then another staff asks me again. i told him no. he looked at a paper that was printed out in his hand saying that MR. Kirby Fukunaga is traveling with his surfboard. what???? he said that there was a note in the computer that i would be bringing a surfboard with me. what???? i told him again that there was no surfboard in my bag and asked him if he ever seen a surfboard 8 inches thick before. he looked at me as if he didn’t even see a surfboard in his life. anyway, i had to explain to him that i had a surfboard when i came to malaysia, but broke it in indonesia so i wasn’t taking any home. they felt the bag again and looked at me as if i were lying. after the staff had a discussion in malay, they finally believed me. was that discrimination? are they targeting surfers? why would they have a note that i will be traveling with a surfboard so make sure to charge me? i was kind of bummed and would like an apology from JAL. i’m really thinking twice of using them again. i feel like i’m on the surfers blacklist and i don’t like it….

if you ever travel to malaysia from japan, use malaysian airlines. they don’t charge for surfboards. it’s free!! shame on you JAL…

*last, wanted to thank Guid Brescian from WWW.SURFCULTURE.IT for the opportunity for the interview for your wonderful mediterranean digital magazine. i just finished it. sorry it’s late as you know i’ve been kind of busy. let me know when it comes out and i’ll introduce everybody to your site. mahalo again.

ROOT CANAL…

good evening. what a beautiful day it was here in hawaii. nice and hot with cool winds. the waves looked fun all around the island but i needed a break. maybe tomorrow morning when i wake up at 4 am, i’ll go and check the waves. maybe north shore? i heard backdoor was good yesterday. anyway, we’ll see…

i stopped by liliha bakery today. it was super packed!!!

i finally went to my dentist to get my tooth fixed. what do you call a root canal in japanese? well, that’s what i had. Dr. Clarence Lee fixed me up and i’m ready to dig into some ice cold ice cream. as i was leaving the dentist office, i was really glad to be home and really glad getting my tooth fixed. it’s been almost 2 months of pain. now i can finally brush my teeth again. haha…
**if your ever in hawaii and need your teeth fixed by hawaii’s best denist, give Dr. Clarence Lee a call. here’s his info. and if you can’t speak english, let me know and i’ll help you out.

Time Zone Dreams…

good morning. jet lagged? 4 different time zones? 4 different currencies? 4 different countries? 4 pages filled in my new passport? wow, i still can’t believe how time flew right on by. bali and yoron feels like years ago. i put on the news last night to take a peak and turned it off after 10 minutes. tv sucks. i don’t want it and i don’t need it. all i want now is a big boat so i can explore the world through the seven seas. i put the first $500 in a separate account for that dream to come true. i just have $999,500 more to go. haha…

this was bali on our last day of our trip. what a way to end it huh? i wonder if isaiah and seth still remember bali? maybe they can refresh my mind….

when i got to padang airport, i seen this indonesian guy pushing a cart with a surfboard bag. he came out as i walked right past him looking for maoh and rikiya. come to find out, that was rikiya. yeah, rikiya had a fresh haircut he got in bali that he probably paid 50 cents for. he just didn’t look right. so for the first few days of the trip, everybody was teasing him and he finally gave in. hayato started the haircut and everybody got a chance at rikiya’s head. wait till you see the video.. haha… i thought it was going to be a disaster but rikiya actually looked really good after.

on our last day of the trip, the waves started to build again. we had enough of barrels so we went searching for an outer reef wave. we pulled up to this pinnacle in the middle of the ocean and a wave started to break. it looked solid 15′ so i grabbed my 6′ and paddled into one of the biggest waves ever ridden in indonesia. when i took off, the wave got bigger and bigger. id say it was solid 30′? anyway, i made the drop and pulled into a huge tube. everybody cheered from the boat as i got spit out of the tube. i came in, showered, grabbed a bintang and had a big smile on my face…. what a last wave…
then i woke up. haha… i’m still so jet lagged that i’m having the weirdest dreams. but i guess it’s all good….
