Poor Man's Lobster…
good morning. 6:30 am. north shore still huge!! second reef breaking with dangerous conditions. overcast and cloudy but should be clearing up. town is flat. good for a dive but too tired. i woke up this morning feeling so healthy. been doing a lot of exercise recently in the ocean and eating healthy so my mind and body is in top shape. going to surf somewhere and enjoy this martin luther day here in hawaii. hope you have a nice day!!!
our barbecue was awesome yesterday. dive in the morning and bbq in the afternoon. a great way to spend this martin luther day holiday weekend.
we call this fish “poor man’s lobster.” why? because if you throw it on the barbecue grill, dip it in butter, and eat it, it taste like lobster. haven’t eaten one in a long time. by the way, this is called a “kala” and this is the kind of fish that made me get hand surgery. every got poked by one? itai yo…
with the fish we caught yesterday, chef brandon “dive bomber” nishiki prepared our catch in all different ways. the first was fish soup, then the bbq kala, then this sweet sour nohu. this dish was better than any chinese restaurant in the world. it was soooo good…. and guess what? i know the recipe…
check this out!! yummy!!! our last dish is steamed fish and those photos will be posted tomorrow….
eat fresh fish, barbecue, have fun, and watch another amazing sunset!!! what a great sunday. a day to relax….
then after all that wonderful food and cold beers, a nap on my friends lazy-boy-sofa to end the night.[]
**thanks brandon and monica for the hospitality…
Surf/Dive Reports
it doesn’t matter if i’m surfing or diving, every sunrise is amazing. it’s the best way to start off the day…
while most of the island is sleeping, we’re moving bright and early. hayato just came to hawaii a couple days ago. he’s ready to surf and dive anytime. brandon’s a pig hunter but not today. the three of us hunted and got some pretty good fish before lunch time…
not too bad for a half/day dive.
estimated value in the fish market? $140.
estimated value of tonight’s barbecue? PRICELESS….
hayato knows what kind of fish to spear. this is a kumu and if you ever been lucky enough to eat one, you would know why this is on the top of every divers list. this is his biggest one so far. enough to feed a family….
today’s dive report: epic conditions in town. glassy, no wind, crystal clean water. 1 shark sighting, 30 turtle sightings. kumu’s, munu’s, roy’s, tako’s mempachi’s, and kole’s in the cooler.
tonight’s bbq report: nitsuke, steamed fish, fried fish, sashimi, pasta, hamburgers, and a lot of ice cold beers!!! [:?????????:]
tomorrow’s surf report: check back tomorrow morning.
tomorrow’s dive report: check back tomorrow morning.
**and last, thank you neal miyake for taking this photo of me at pipeline yesterday. after i passed you by, i pulled into the barrel for 10 seconds, got spit out, did a round house cutback, then ended up the wave with a 360 air reverse.
then i woke up… haha…
