read an article of a diver’s catch getting taken by a shark at ala moana beach park. so they posed signs. ummm… do you think it’s a divers responsibility to report such incidents? i was thinking about it as i read the article on the local news site. as a diver or surfer, do you think we should report all shark encounters? so every time i see a big tiger shark out at waikiki, i should call the lifeguards so they post shark warning signs? that’s a good question. would i be responsible if i didn’t report it and somebody gets attacked by a shark? ummm… got me thinking. i’ll just say this for now, there are sharks EVERYWHERE!!! if there’s ocean. if all divers and surfers reported shark sightings, we would have shark warning signs posted everyday on every beach in hawaii. when you keep on seeing and having close encounters with sharks, you tend to get use to it. we see tiger sharks everywhere and even after almost getting attacked by one a while ago in waikiki, i didn’t feel like i had to tell the lifeguards or anything. it felt like another day in the ocean. it’s part of life. if you go into the ocean, there will be sharks. just like if your a mailman in waianae, you will encounter vicious dogs. by the way, that little 8′ shark in the photo was right out waikiki in 10′ deep water. it probably could have bitten your leg off. just joking….
i come to japan at this time of year for what? for this!!! normal people are tying down their boats, boarding up the windows, storing water and food, and wishing this typhoon will turn away and back on down. me? i’m getting on a plane tomorrow and heading to the action. stay tuned for photos and video. typhoon season on!!! i’m so excited i won’t be able to sleep tonight….
Lifeguards Post Shark Warning Signs At Ala Moana..
The Beauty of Japan..
good morning. just checked the forecast and there’s another typhoon forming near guam. my boards are packed and i’m ready to move. chasing typhoons is what we do.. stay tuned….
dropped by DESTINATION SURF the other day to grab some gear for this years traveling. i’m not only going to say this because they sponsor me. but you know what, destination by far makes the best quality products. i still use leashes from 6 years ago on the north shore and of the 10 + years i’ve been riding for them, only one has broken on me. and that’s because my fin cut it. that, you can’t help. one day you might be surfing 15′ third reef pipeline and if your leash breaks out there, sayonara. don’t compromise when your dealing with your life and safety. get destination…. wanted to thank ohmi-san and the boys in shonan for keeping me connected to my board for all these years….
last week i woke up from my afternoon nap at jasmin’s house in chiba. looked out the window and “oh my gosh” check out this amazing sunset….
the sky was on fire!!!! ran upstairs to grab a beer and sat with some friends watching this spectacular sunset. the beauty of japan….
and last, when i was watching nao win the firewire junior pro yesterday at kugunuma, i was thinking about the girls back in hawaii. how cool would it be if they could all surf a contest together. alyssa, kelia, and alissa would love to come to japan to surf a contest here. maybe we can make it happen? or nao can go to hawaii next summer for the 2nd annual go-naminori invitational? either way, i want to see japan’s top girls and hawaii’s top girls all surf together. that way they will make friendships and take it to the top together. now that would be cool. this photo was taken before the final at the go-naminori contest at kewalos. everybody’s happy and that’s all that counts….
