早朝、ボウルズの駐車場にいたら、暗闇のなかから知らない人が近づいてきて”hey, キミってカービー？”と声をかけてきた。イエスと答えたら、”omg, 僕のこと覚えてるかい？ハレイワ小学校で同じクラスだったんだよ”と。僕は”その辺のことは何も覚えていないんだ。人生最悪な時期だったから、いろんなことが完全に抜け落ちてるんだ”と話した。そしたら彼は、”なぁ、キミとはいつもケンカしてばかりだったから、先生に校長室に連れて行かれたんだよ。そしてキミの父親ホセ・アンゲルにお仕置きされたんだよ”だって。それを聞いて全部思い出した。そう、僕は本当に悪い子だったから、誰かと一緒に何度も校長室送りになっていたんだ。きっとそれが彼だろう。継父は校長先生だったから、僕らを膝のうえに乗せ、デカいパドルでケツを引っ叩いたんだ！パンツに穴が空いちゃったのをハッキリ覚えてる。 そして家に帰って、さらに叱られたんだ。この人はKepa。今もハレイワに住んでるらしい。僕のこと覚えてたなんて、ありえないよね??? たった7歳、小学校2年生だよ？ 最後に会ったのは48年前なのに、どうして覚えてたんだろ??? Crazy! とにかくKepaはすごい記憶力だ。何年経っても、あんなお仕置きに効果があったのかは疑問だよ。昔は力いっぱい叩かれすぎて、痛くなくなったんだ。そのせいで今でも痛みににぶくなっちゃってるのかな…

Aloha to my Tohoku friends!  Azumi-san and Naomi-san I hope to see you soon.  You guys look so happy!  Thank you Toda-san and Takami-san for keeping the “We Are One” mission alive.  I miss all you guys!
