100 Year Old Japanese Koto…

good morning. 7am on this perfect sunday morning. sunny skies, light winds making for perfect surf. lani’s looks the best today with chest/shoulder high waves. got 25 guys out already. town is small with waist high sets. 10 guys out at bowls sitting around waiting for a wave that comes every 15 minutes or so. 12 guys out at the park. looking good for a diving or hunting day. or just plain relax…. what ever you do, have a great and safe day….

i remember when i was a like 6 or 7 years old and use to go to my grandma osaki’s house. she use to always be playing her koto. and that’s when that song “sakura” or “cherry tree” got stuck in my mind. and it still is. when ever i hear that song or i sing that song in my head, i can clearly remember my grandma playing it on this very koto….

my grandma was a collector. she use to travel to japan around 70 years ago to buy dishes, vases, and other expensive things. and when it came to buying these things, she always bought the best. i’d estimate this to be over 100 years old. and worth a lot of money. but to our family, this koto is priceless….

i remember touching and moving all these little white things. i use to get scolded all the time. gosh, i wish i knew how to play this so i can bring it back to life. the sound, the music, and all those precious memories of my grandma….

Hawaii Halloween: Adults Only….

good evening. it was a pretty nice day out there today. went to the east side and when i drove by makapuu, i couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. check out the guy sailing in the sky. i want to try that someday. except, i’m afraid of heights…

ok, check out our halloween crew last night. can you guess which one was me? don’t ask me what i was because i don’t know….

takami-san was stitch. and while we were walking down the street, we must have bumped into 5 more. that’s a pretty cool costume. but must be mighty hot in there….

toda-san had the best one. he was dressed as a baby. so many people stopped him to take a photo with him. check out the baby’s little wiener… haha. classic…

adam and eve. i didn’t need a photo of adam so i just took one of eve holding her apple. this crazy girl taped 3 leaves on her front. and the back had even a smaller one. i can’t show that photo because my blog is rated PG. imagine walking around packed waikiki dressed like this? i’m surprised she didn’t get arrested. and get this, there were more crazy costumes that i can’t show. if you want to see it, you just have to come to waikiki and see it for yourself. the biggest halloween fiesta in the world right in waikiki. can’t wait till next year. i better start looking for my leaves. or should i say, leaf….
