The Hustle

we all agreed it was a good day to try something different.  and it turned to be the best decision for this 4th of July.

when we got out, there was absolutely nobody out???  i’ve surfed here over a hundred times and this was the first time it was only us all morning.  and the waves and conditions were pretty dam good!

i always tell my students “paddle into every wave like it’s going to be your last wave of your life.”  this is what i’m talking about!

and i always tell my students never to take off between 2 surfers.  this wave i did that and almost killed myself.  i was trying to watch one of the girls on the left.   and the other one on the right.

and because i wasn’t looking forward, i had one of my heaviest wipeouts in a while.

thank goodness nobody got hurt.  sorry girls, i will never do that again!

this girl has become a style master.  calm, confident, and cool!

i honestly expected the waves to be tiny and crowded this morning because it’s a holiday.  i was 100% wrong on that one.  sometimes i like to be wrong…

Round by Round

this morning was cloudy, dark, cold, but excellent small waves.  and if you rode it right, you will be rewarded!

this girl is getting good so fast!  the timing of the takeoff is so important and when you figure that out, everything becomes easier.

taking off in the right spot lets you turn down the side of the wave.  that’s where you get all your speed, and that’s where you start feeling like a real surfer.

we went back out for Round 2 this afternoon.  round by round, i can see huge improvements.  this girl is determined and is putting in the effort to become great!   and it’s so lovely to watch!

i’m not an electrician but this stuff isn’t hard to figure out.  a couple youtube videos and now i’m a certified youtube electrician!  haha.

my Grandpa built my house and i love everything about it.  i want to keep everything the same so i started to refinish my door handles.

finished!  you won’t find these around anymore.  now i have to look for the key.  classic is back!

Be Smart Hawaii

i couldn’t believe when i saw this photo on the news.  this boat owner hired a termite fumigation company to tent his boat.  and the termite company did it!  really???   that can’t be good for the environment.

as i was paddling in from Bowls yesterday, i paddled over this net.  the guys on the beach camped overnight and put this long net over the stretch of reef.

the fish can’t see it until it’s too late.  i saw so many dead fish in the net and i actually got sad.  this is the very reason why we don’t have fish in Hawaii anymore.

this is actually legal here in Hawaii so nothing can be done about it.   the crazy thing is every living sea creature that swims through this net will die.  sharks and turtles included.

and as you can see, the reef is smashed and dead!  not smashed and dead because of the net.  but it’s smashed and dead from all those surf schools that let their students step on the reef, along with their instructors.  pretty sad if you’re a diver like me because i saw this reef thriving before.  not anymore…

let’s be smart Hawaii!
