a lot of people don’t know about hawaiian style vs. japanese style. i’ll explain.
Hawaiian Style: Laid back, easy going, slow life, always late, no problem.
Japanese Style: Fast life, well planned, organized, and never late.
take my boat for example. before i left to japan last time, i put my boat into a restoration process because i would be gone for 3 weeks. more than enough time right? wrong! after the first week i’m gone, i call the guy from japan to see if he started. no answer, no reply. 2 weeks later, i call him from bali. no answer, no reply. 3 weeks later i call him from japan the day before i leave. no answer, no reply. but this time, i leave a message “hey dude, i’m coming back tomorrow so i hope my boat is ready because i want to dive as soon as i get back.” i fly back to hawaii, i pass by his house on the way back from the airport, and guess what? he just started the job. every day since i’ve been back, i’ve been going over to help. why? because if i don’t, nothing will get done. WELCOME BACK TO HAWAII KIRBY! haha. now do i get mad? no i can’t. this is hawaii and this is the culture. we say in japanese “Shikataganai” which means, “it can’t be helped.”
i use to live the laid back hawaiian style before. i use to make people wait, use to be late, and it was no problem. but after traveling throughout japan all these years, i learned that being on time is important. being on time gains peoples trust, and respect. and being on time gets you work.
as for the hawaiian style, not everybody is like that in hawaii. just only 95%. haha.
