i got a call this morning at 5am from Kaiborg. he said be at the Haleiwa harbor within an hour. i said “yes sir” and flew down because i’ve been waiting for this chance for a very long time. it was my first time tow in foiling and i was going to get towed in by the best in the world.
Kaiborg let me borrow everything so i just showed up with my trucks. i wasn’t scared of the waves even though it was pretty big. but i was a little nervous because it was my first time towing in, it was my first time surfing that outer reef spot, and it was my first time riding equipment i’ve never rode before. that’s a lot of firsts for me so yeah, i had to do what i teach my students: keep calm and connect!
when it was my turn, Kaiborg said “grab the rope and when i say let go, let go!” in my mind, i knew he wasn’t going to let me practice or start me off on a small one. he just drove me out to the sets and when he turned on a big one and said “let go,” i took a breath, let go of the rope, and had the best ride in my life!
the waves were only about 8′ Hawaiian scale, so 16-18′ faces. you’re literally going 40mph (65KM) flying down the steepest hill of your life. i had a couple wipeouts and even though i had a padded vest, i think i broke some ribs. i’m having a hard time breathing. haha…
no pain, no gain…
thank you Kaiborg for the experience of a lifetime. i can’t wait to do it again! but after my ribs heal…
