around 20 years ago, i went to Mexico for a surf trip. i walked down to the local fishing village and experienced some fresh seafood. i still don’t know what this was. it looked like an oyster, BUT, it tasted like a scallop. it even tasted like a mix of an oyster and a scallop.
i squeezed a fresh lime over this, then i dropped that same lime into my ice cold Corona beer. i thought i was in heaven.
anyway, i went on that photo surf trip to Mexico with Scott Aichner who happened to be the best water photographer in the world at that time. we were staying in Puerto Escondido when he introduced me to these top Mexican Pro surfers. we surfed 10′ Puerto Escondido and these guys were the top guys out there. one day they invited me to surf a secret spot. we drove 3 hours and these guys told me that if i tell anyone where this spot was, i could possible get killed. and i believed them. there wasn’t even a name for that spot and there was nobody else there. we pulled into a bumpy dirt road and surfed one of the best waves i ever seen. after that session, they told me to forget what just happened. and i really did forget because i didn’t want to be the one to expose Mexico’s best kept secret. as years gone by, other people started talking and next thing you know, this spot became one of the most popular surf destinations in the world. that spot is called Barra de la Cruz. it’s no secret anymore…
