Tiger Shark Day

13

Everybody still asks me “are there sharks in Hawaii?”  My answer has always been “if there is ocean, there are sharks.”  We are in their territory and the more you think about it, the less you will enjoy.  As divers, we don’t like to talk about sharks until we’re heading home safely.

After is shot this Uku, I put my knife into its head to kill it.  Then all the blood started to rush out.  This is where you must be very careful.  It’s a free meal for a hungry shark and they will come and eat it right off your hand or head.  Or both.  Five seconds after I took this photo, I felt something weird over my right shoulder.

This tiger shark had its mouth wide open just a few feet away getting ready to eat his free meal.  If I didn’t look, I probably wouldn’t be here writing this blog today.  When he knew I saw him, he turned to the left and swam along my side.  I was watching his eye as he was watching mine.  It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced.

Then I look over my left shoulder and see another shark by the name of Kimo Gaspar chasing that big tiger shark away.
