i remember my 2 little nephews just a few years ago surfing queen’s. they refused to leave that place and use to tell my that it was the best wave in the world. then they graduated and moved on to kewalo’s. i heard a thousand times how good kewalo’s was. i use to just laugh at them because i knew they didn’t know what the heck was out there for them. i teased them a lot, i pushed them a lot, and i will keep on doing that until one of them become world champion. these days, my little nephews are finally stepping up and surfing backdoor and pipeline. my sister always gets so excited when they catch good waves. for me, it’s automatic. i always knew the potential in the kids, i always knew they could do what ever they wanted to, and i always knew that they will be the big names on the north shore. at age 14 and 15, Seth Moniz and Josh Moniz are doing just that. they are showing the world the talent they have and i’m finally starting to get real excited for them. they are now in the major league of surfing and shining at the most infamous surf spot in the world!
i got an email from my sister yesterday evening saying she took these photos an hour before. first wave was seth moniz taking off on a hollow backdoor wave, pulling in, and making it.
seth gets deep and gets spit out. then the next wave….
josh moniz takes off, pulls in, and gets deep too.
then josh gets spit out. my sister took 40 photos of the 2 boys sequence. i was super stoked to come home to see this because uncle kirby was working all day so it was super rewarding to see the boys getting barreled for me.
want to know the funny part of this story? the 2 boys use to drop in on me all the time at queen’s and kewalo’s. i use to laugh, paddle back out, and tell them both: “hey you kids, one day when you paddle for your dream wave at backdoor, uncle kirby is going to drop in on you and laugh. that day will come, and you will both be bummed at me.” they use to laugh at me but if i was out yesterday at backdoor, i guarantee you i will be riding in the front of both of them. haha.
good job sister on the photos. i bet your proud, but not as proud as i am right now. i was waiting for days like this to come and i bet you remember me telling you about it. it’s the kids time to shine, it’s the kids time to take it to the next level. anybody want to bet me that one of these kids will make it into the Pipeline Masters someday? you’ll be a sucker to bet me on that one. i seen the potential in these kids when they were 7 and 8 years old. not just because their my nephews, it was because of their talent and drive to make it to the top!
