5 STAR JAPAN: MORIKAWA

250

good morning. jetlag? yeah, i woke up at 3am and don’t even remember how i fell asleep last night. just remembering having one of the best dinners ever in japan, then at a bar sipping on a jack/coke, and waking up at 3am with my phone on my chest. i guess i was trying to blog something and fell asleep. well, i’m wide awake and it’s going to be a long day. meeting in tokyo, then off to okinawa. and i’m sure it’s going to be an all night party tonight once i get there. all i can think of now is how i’m going to run away. haha. anyway, check out what i ate last night. yes, all of this!

this place is a super famous kyoto style restaurant in akasaka. it only seats 6 and you’re right in front watching the 4 chefs prepare traditional japanese dishes. the experience started from the start when we pulled up and they were waiting for us outside. yeah, VIP style.
photo 22
i can’t even count how many dishes came out but i tried to take a photo of most of them. some, i just forgot because as soon as it came out, i went down my throat. this is the tai or snapper sashimi.
photo 13
i saw the guy grab a huge black abalone, clean it, cut it, and this melted in my mouth with the crab miso on the top. my mom would love this! but for now, she’ll just have to wait. and check out the dishes. my grandma would have loved this place too.
photo 12
then crab with caviar? topped with miso? OMG! this one went good with the champagne.
photo 14
this was smoked saba. this one went good with the whisky.
photo 15
and i don’t know what this is called but i love it. it’s like a giant edamame. good with beer.
photo 1
giant shishamo or ayu. the fish eggs melted in my mouth. another great dish for champagne.
photo 23
then the master chef opened up this box. i was wondering what he was doing?
photo 24
then he lit it on fire right in front of me! then he seared the katsuo or aku. it was pure japanese tradition but he told me it was a polynesian fire show. haha.
photo 25
this is the katsuo tataki. OMG! the best ever.
photo 11
then this came out. i don’t know what this is called to but it was delicious!

the right is uni over eggplant. the left is suppon chawanmushi. yeah, suppon is turtle. i felt bad eating it but i forgave myself after the first suppoon. got it?
photo 21
umm. i couldn’t figure this one out but it tasted like the soup my grandma use to make.

i was the first foreigner from hawaii to ever step into this restaurant. and guess what? probably not the last. why? because i’ll probably get lucky and get to go there again. haha. you won’t find this place on the internet, you will have to wait a long time to get a reservation, and once you get in, you better have a fat wallet because this place is one of the highest class restaurants in the world. as i took my first sip of champagne and ate my first course, i thought i was in heaven. it was all like a dream to me. i’ve always wanted to experience deep japan, i’ve been to the cheapest places, and to the most expensive places. and the thing that always makes it a good experience is the people you’re with. good food, good friends, good life. simple!
