the boys went up another level in experience, and skill. we did something different today, which was to drift dive. i take my boat out to the 50′ blue water, we all jump in, and drift with my boat. it’s kind of tricky because you have to time the wind and current, and at the same time, stay near the boat. i told the kids that the fish act differently in the deep water. why? because they aren’t use to seeing anybody diving down that deep to get them. haha. i spot 2 big uhus at 50′ deep, they had no chance. 2 dives later, they were both in my cooler. it was almost too easy. the fish act differently in all different kinds of environment and it’s pretty cool trying to outsmart them. we eventually filled up the cooler until it couldn’t close so it was time to go in. Kylen dove 70x, i dove 55x, and Gen probably dove 70 too. these kids are getting better and better. super proud of them.
there was a ledge we drove over. from 40′ dropping off to 120′. we anchor, we jump in, and check it out. i drop down into a pile of fish, i wait on the bottom calmly, then i see this fish coming out of the deep blue. it was a Spotted Knife Jaw or “Ishi-Dai” in japanese. these fish are really rare in hawaii, especially this size. i wait patiently, he comes in, i take a shot, and he is mine.
Gen and Kylen are getting so good at diving. when i first went with them a couple of years ago, they were just babies. now, they are growing into fine water men. good surfing, good diving, what more could you ask for? good job boys!
and want to thank Gen for this amazing photo he took this morning. you couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day in hawaii. tonight we will all be sleeping like babies. good night.
