the talk in the water is about the shark attacking the surfer the other day at leftovers. Wade Tokoro told me his friend got knocked off his board at Laniakea 30 minutes earlier by a tiger shark. same shark? guarantee! will i surf Laniakea or Leftovers again? guarantee! but not anytime soon.
check out this log that came down the ala wai canal. freaking dangerous!
this morning the waves were super clean and fun. planned to surf but the girls were burnt out of surfing 3 days in a row so we went fishing instead.
there is a mooring about 30′ deep under the water. there is a rope attached to it so i asked one of the girls to go down and get it. she kept on trying and trying and couldn’t get it. i said keep trying! finally, she grabbed it and did her personal best dive ever at 13 years old. she was so stoked!
we fished around there but for some reason, the fish weren’t biting? weird???
so we drove around diamond head and went to fish at 100′ deep blue water. it was so freaking hot so i threw on my mask and jumped in for a swim. as soon as i got in the water, i seen 2 huge ono’s!!! omg!
i jump back on the boat, grab my speargun, and go back in.
i tell the girls to jump in the water too! i just wanted them to see these amazing huge fish! we swim together and wait. a couple of minutes later, here they come! the same 2 huge ono’s swimming down below us around 50′. i dive down, the smaller one swims up to me, i could have shot it in the head guarantee. instead, i wait for the bigger one. it comes in close, i take the shot, BAM, and my shaft bounces off the head. OMG! my gun was way too small. the fish didn’t even know what hit him as he swam away very slowly. the girls were tripping out! the biggest fish they ever seen in their lives. it was like the discovery channel for them. for me, i was bummed. i went home, got out my big gun, threw it in the truck, now i’ll have trouble sleeping wondering “what if?” tomorrow morning i’m waking up, checking the surf. if it’s good, i’m surfing. if it’s not good, i’m going hunting for that huge ono that got away.
i was teaching Aoi how to get barreled. yelling from the side “pull in!!!!”
give him a few more days and he will get barreled. and once he does, this young boys life will change forever.
great job Aoi. study hard, surf hard, respect locals, and smile!
