i wake up this morning and watch Round 5 of the Volcom Pro. Joshua wins his heat and i was super stoked!
when they were interviewing him, i thought to myself “wait, this kid can win this contest so i better get down there!” i cancel everything i had scheduled, and headed out to the North Shore.
went the East side way so more beautiful views and no traffic.
i get to Pipeline and there was my family, all cheering for Josh. this is where i belonged today.
Josh was as calm as can be. he knows his day would come. maybe not today, but someday.
i watch in awe as this kid caught a backwash wave half way out to the lineup. must be from all the foil surfing. haha.
a semifinal and final later, Joshua Moniz is on top of the world. as i was standing there taking these photos, i was thinking “is this real???”
in the Moniz family, there is love everywhere. especially from my sister Tammy.
and when you have this much love and support, anything is possible.
i come home and turn on the news. and there is was, “A Star is Born.” now the whole world knows who Joshua Moniz is. it’s about time!
this was one of his big barreling two scores to win the event.
the commentators said Joshua is the first Hawaiian to ever win the Volcom Pro. yes, they got that right, but they forgot something else. Joshua is also the first Japanese to ever win the Volcom Pro too! half and half and proud of his roots!
and this was his other 8 point ride. i still can’t believe he came out of this barrel! he came back to beat Pipe Master Jamie O’Brian in the last 4 minutes of the final! you should have heard everybody screaming on the beach!!!
today was the happiest day of my surfing life and i didn’t even surf. haha! i’m so proud of you Joshua!
and thank you to all my friends around the world for all the texts and calls. i’m a very happy man! and very emotionally tired. goodnight!
