i seen this big Hawaiian foiling out at Diamond Head. he was ripping and riding any wave he wanted. then he paddles out to me and says “Kirby, remember me? 1990 Japan trip?” OMG! i knew right there it was my friend and teammate from Kauai, Kalani Viera. we both traveled to Japan for our very first time back in 1990 for the World Contest!
so if it wasn’t for him and i foiling, i would have probably never crossed his path again. i was so happy to see this cool Hawaiian. we had an awesome time in Miyazaki and Niijima back in 1990. memories i will never forget… good to see you Kalani!
the best SUP foiler on Oahu is Kaleo. you wouldn’t believe how good he is. i had to sit back, watch, and learn.
and when i seen him do the biggest round house cutback, i got totally inspired. the coolest thing ever.
then i met Mike who is another foiler. at 65 years old, he told me that he’s reborn.
and Tony is like the waterman of the watermen. all these guys out at Diamond Head that day and nobody could say anything. i love having sessions with these guys because i can feel the “mana” or power in their surfing and love for the ocean. it’s sessions like this that are priceless to me. the Real Hawaiian Watermen session!
