Snorkel Talk

It’s pretty rare to have such a calm and silent day out in the ocean.  If you can see in the distance, that is the island of Oahu.  So we are about 20 miles or 32 kilometers out at sea.  It’s so quiet that it’s basically silent out there.  When I’m driving the boat, I can hear the boys talking through their snorkels.  If you’re underwater, you won’t hear anything, but we still talk like that anyway.  Basically talking to ourselves.  I heard things like “wow, clean water.  so beautiful.  watch out for that shark.  oh, jellyfish.  OMG, you missed.  OMG, I missed.  and so forth.”  I’m listening to the conversations laughing to myself.

Free diving is the most therapeutic thing you can possibly do.  It’s basically you and the ocean.  Once you’re in the water, you’re in your own world with zero distractions.  All you hear are the whales singing and as you go deeper and deeper, you almost catch yourself falling asleep.

Sometimes you have a weird feeling like something is watching you.  There are many times I turn around and there is a shark right behind my fins.  Sometimes whales too.

On this day, it was so calm that the boat wasn’t even moving.  I don’t remember ever diving on a calm day like that.  You couldn’t ask for any better conditions.

Want to congratulate my brother for finishing the Honolulu Marathon this morning.  He didn’t need his slippers this year but he took it on his waist belt just in case.  I still don’t understand why he does it???

The Deep Silhouette

I’ve known Kimo Gasper for over 35 years.  He’s a super good underground surfer that only the hardcore surfers know.  Also one of the best divers on the island. We went to Japan together in 1990 for the World Surfing Championships, we surfed Big Rights for 35 years straight on every big swell, and now we’re taking sunrise photos together.  Haha.

The water was so clean!  So clean that when the boys were diving, I could see sharks swimming to check them out.  I’ve never experienced that kind of visibility before.

When the dolphins swam by, it looked like an oil painting.

On the way back, it was sunset photo time.  We were still between islands and it was the calmest day the ocean will ever get.

After spending the peaceful day surrounded by nature in total seclusion, it’s never a happy time on the approach back to Oahu.  It’s a time when you realize “what happened to this island???”

For the whole day, this is what we were looking at.  The sun rays beaming down hundreds of feet into the deep blue sea.  You get mesmerized and almost sucked out of reality.  Your heartbeat is slow, your breath is calm, and you’re almost falling asleeep.  Then out of the deep when you see a silhouette of a big fish or shark, you wake up really fast.
