i’ve been researching and learning so much about the boat operations in hawaii. i’ve been to places that i thought that never existed. i pulled up to the Keehi Marine Center last week and felt like i walked into a whole new world. huge boats everywhere getting worked on. then i went into the office to ask questions about getting a boat pulled out there. i walk in and the manager comes to me and says “Hey Kirby, remember me?” umm, looks very familiar. come to find out, Yoshi is the older brother of my good high school surfer friend Fumi! Fumi and i use to hang out all the time going surfing back in the 80’s. i remembered Yoshi too. it was super cool bumping into friends that i haven’t seen for over 25 years. glad to hear that Fumi is a police man. nice to see you again Yoshi. i’ll be seeing you again very soon.
then i passed by the honolulu harbor and seen the biggest cruise ship. i wonder how these guys drive one of these monsters? i get nervous even thinking about it.
glad to see the progress going on in cambodia. Davis new house coming up soon!
ok, the weird wind is here again. waves and conditions will be good if you know where to look. i’m still feeling the happiness of my barrels at off the wall. kind of want to get more really soon. until then, going to keep working, keep busy, and enjoy our beautiful island of oahu. good night.
It's a Small World
Whales and BBQ's
i’d have to say that yesterday was yet another freak of nature day. from whales, to turtles, to bbq, to friends. just all so good.
once in a while i like to eat an american breakfast. my favorite is corn beef hash with eggs. this gave me some power for a great fun day ahead!
after i surfed, i seen some movement in the ocean outside of bowls. i go out to take a look and out of the blue, i see this huge whale jump out right in front of the boat!!! it was super exciting! then the whale would disappear for 20 seconds, then jump again. the whole body was out of the water creating huge explosive splashes. no other boats were around so we were just sitting there enjoying the free show. then off to the side, i see a fishing boat coming toward us. they had no idea what was going on but i surely did. that’s why i got out my camera. i knew where the whale went down and was going to come up so as the 30′ fishing boat approached, i was trying to wave my arms to tell them to turn away. then all of a sudden, the whale jumped right towards their boat! i could hear them yelling and freaking out! the whale actually splashed their boat and i’m sure they will be telling this story to their grandkids. we ended up staying there for another half an hour watching the whale then i couldn’t wait anymore so i grabbed my mask and jumped in. from a distance i seen the biggest shadow ever as the little girl on my boat yelled at me “what are you doing! you are crazy!!!!” haha. i got back on the boat, got scolded, looked at the little girl and said “hey, someday you will be crazy too.”
no, this is not photoshopped. this is real. abunai ne. if i was in the fishing boat, i would have freaked out!
then 5 tourist boats came out to join the action but it was too late. the whales don’t like people so they stopped jumping and swam away. gosh, we were so lucky!
then we had a bbq last night. hawaiian style kind with good food and good friends.
Reid just got back from a 2 week eating spree in japan. Kimura-san and Reid with stomachs full of happiness!
