Red Sea Presents in Mexico!

ok, still didn’t get to upload the photos i took in mexico because i’ve been too busy. but these were some of the few i dropped on my desktop and forgot to post. i’m not a really big fan of tournaments but this one was for a good cause. it was my first one and it actually felt rewarding to do something good for the orphans of mexico.
Kyle and Cathy Nakamoto brought all these goodies from hawaii. all prizes were donated by really cool people and companies and it really made so many people happy, including me!

of the 15 or so competitors, the captains, and even the cooks, we all got to take something home. when everybody is happy, i am extremely happy!

Red Sea Ocean Adventures, Banana Boat, NOH, Crow, Hawaiian Host, Hanapa, Kona Red, Riffe, and so many other sponsors were thanked by the bottom of our hearts!

some pretty cool lures were given the the mexican boat captains. i’m sure they are catching fish with it as we speak.

these are my 2 new mexican dive friends. i met them on the trip, spent 1 week with them, and feel like i’ve known these guys for years. diving brought us all together. the only reason they beat our team is because i threw a 40lbs. fish off the boat on the way in. haha. these 2 guys David and Palma kept us all entertained the entire week. i’m sure i’ll see these amigos again!

last, everybody asks me if mexico is dangerous. my first trip was to Tijuana 25 years ago. i remember being so scared because i heard the horror stories of drug cartels, mafias, and high crime rate. then i went to Puerto Escondido 12 years ago and i was pretty scared there after i seen a guy drunk on tequila walking to the beach with fresh stab wounds as i was about to paddle out. but this past trip changed my whole outlook on a country that is notorious for crime. mexico was totally safe, friendly, and clean. if you mind your own business and keep clean, you will be ok. but if you start making trouble or doing illegal things, you might end up in a tunnel like these guys did earlier this year in mexico. yes, it happens in every country around the world. i actually felt safer walking in a mexico city at night then i feel walking in china town, oahu. now that is freaking scary!

Teddy's Burgers in Hawaii and The Hilton Lagoon

wow, the waves were super fun today at ala moana. took this 12 year old kid named Masamune-kun for the first surf session of his life. a very shy kid when i picked him up, he didn’t even laugh at my jokes, but once he went over the first wave, his bright smile came out! every wave he went over, he was smiling, and every big wave that he went over, he was laughing out loud. this kid did a great job surfing 5 hours with me today. my goal is to get him on a 9’0 high performance long board before he goes back to japan. he started off on the 11’0, then he rode the 10’0, and tomorrow he will try the 9’0. super fast progression and super talented kid.
the things you can learn from kids. i asked Masamune-kun, “where do you want to eat lunch?” he said “teddy’s burgers.” ok, it’s my first time so why not? we went there and the hamburgers were amazing! much more better than kua aina for sure. i will be visiting teddy’s burgers more often from now on.

i ordered the combo big burger for $10. came with crunchy fries and a drink. i usually don’t like hamburgers, but i like teddy’s. thanks kid!

was at the hilton lagoon yesterday thinking to myself “wow, hilton did a smart thing by dredging out the lagoon a few years ago. it use to be filled with spoiled ala wai water and absolutely nobody use to swim in there. now it’s clean ocean water, nice sand, and a great place to relax. i bet the project must have costed hundreds of thousands of dollars to complete, but i’m sure it will bring in millions and millions of dollars of revenue to the hotel and hawaii. smart business plan.”

well, going to take the kid Masamune-kun surfing 2 more times this week. his dream is to become a railroad engineer or a doctor. my dream is to turn him into a railroad engineer/surfer, or doctor/surfer. any one will make him a very successful and happy man in the future! see you tomorrow morning kid, and don’t forget to practice your 1, 2, 3, tonight!
