Free Life, Free Everything!

ever since i became an amateur surfer back in 1987, i got free things. starting off with clothes, then surfboards, then sunglasses, then watches, then wax, then leashes, and then anything that had to do with surfing. i was very fortunate to be in the surf boom bubble where every company gave away free things to promote their product, including money and trips. that’s 25 years of free stuff that probably adds up to a million dollars. in the beginning, i was super stoked! towards the middle, i was spoiled, and now, i appreciate everything that comes my way. times are different now and every company is tightening up. but my sponsors and friends keep on supporting my dream life. i just got 2 new custom surfboards shaped by Chris Kaysen from San Clemente. then Matchi just made me 3 new boards for my upcoming Mentawai trip that will be waiting for me in tokyo. i’m super happy, super excited, and super looking forward to riding each and every one. i know that Chris and Matchi spent hours on my boards and i really appreciate it. and i also appreciate Yassan and TSSC for keeping me on the latest designs so my surfing can live on forever. every board i get from TSSC is MAGIC! if you want yours, better RIGHT HERE AT TSSC.COM to find out how!

this is probably the 1000th surfboard i got for free since i started surfing. i use to ride for Town and Country at one time and they use to give me 24 surfboards a year. looking back, that was pretty crazy.

Chris Kaysen, your boards work really good! been riding them everyday and still having a hard time controlling it because they go too fast.

my short boards use to be 6’1 and 6’2. now, i’m down to 5’6, and 5’7’s. loose, fast, and lots of drive equates to a magic board.

can you believe i still even get free wax? thank you Destination for all the years for the gear.

along with my sponsors, i have great friends that support me. take Akudo-san for example. Akudo-san owns the fashion brand called “Standard California.” he has an amazing store in Ebisu, Tokyo that i think is cool. and so are the clothes he custom designs. they just did a collaboration with champion and the clothes are top quality, and top style. this is the goodie bag he brought for me to hawaii. super stoked!

am i lucky or what? if i had to buy my own surfboards and gear, i’d be homeless. so i want to take this time to thank each and every sponsor i had all these years, and thank the sponsors i still have today. and also want to thank all my friends who own companies that give me free stuff all the time. you’ve made my life so easy, and made my life so happy. i appreciate each and every one of you. thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Longest nose ride and longest ride ride

i can’t be a luckier person to be able to surf everyday here in hawaii. yesterday, i surfed for 6 hours! almost my record time for a day. the waves and weather were perfect!

Yoda-san really wants to get better in surfing so before we paddled out, i told him that i will be honest, give him my opinion, and we will take it from there. from the first wave, i surfed aside of him and was coaching him like a trainer coaching a boxer. while taking video, i was yelling “bend your knees! look forward! turn! walk the board! Uppercut! haha. just joking. Yoda-san’s dream was to walk the board and not only did he walk the board, he rode on the nose for a long time. he’s been surfing for 4 years and he’s really good! yesterday, he rode the nose for the first time, and yesterday, he rode his longest wave in his life. i was more stoked than him!

then i seen a japanese girl that paddled out. looked familiar but didn’t want to stare at her too much. why? because i’m not a stalker. then after a few waves, she came up to me and we talked. come to find out, i met Naoko 2 years ago on the beach. she is staying at daisuke’s house, which is 1 minute from my house. what a small world again! hey Naoko, nice to see you again. excellent english, and excellent surfing. hope you enjoy your rest of your stay here in hawaii. thanks for the photo from 2 years ago. i totally remember this day. and see you in the water!
