good morning. 6 am on this chilly saturday morning. small waves around the island. but there is one really good spot that i surfed yesterday evening and i’m going there right now. 2010 is going to be a dawn patrol year!!! see you in the dark….

this is called an Opelu Kala or also known as a Sleek Unicorn fish. these fish usually hang out in the deep water. it was 15 years ago when i was on my boat hungry and decided to try this thing out raw. we cut it up, chilled it on ice, dipped it in shoyu/wasabi, and from that day on, i’m always looking for this fish. to me, it’s some of the best sashimi out there. the funny thing is that not too many people know how good it is and i’m ok with that. the more for us!!! this one is on the bigger side. a lot of white meat for a lot of sashimi…

the only thing with this fish is you have to watch out for the spines, and the razors on the tail. if you handle this fish the wrong way, you can end up on a surgery table at the hospital, like how i did. be very careful!!! but hey, look at all that meat!!!

this is the best way to eat it. local style….

good evening. my life has changed ever since i took a new approach to life. i can’t be wasting my precious days in bed with a headache from the night before. especially new years day. so i don’t drink, i take it easy, and start off my new years day like how i want every day to be that year. i slept early last night with my earplugs. i wake up at 4:30 am….

and see the first sunrise of the year. shortly after, i surf my first session of the year at a secret spot with nobody out. i even got barreled!

then i visit my grandma. i felt like i went to heaven and back….

then i check diamond head on the way home and guess what? new years day swell!! super fun and glassy waves!!! evening session…

i went to my friends house for a new years party last night. check out my dinner. great food and it actually tasted good with water…. my friend drank a little too much alcohol and wait till you see what he did… stay tuned….
