when we were washing my boat, my friend on another boat just came in. look what they caught. crab and ulua? crab? i didn’t even know we had crabs like that in hawaii…
i never use to spear kala because i didn’t know how to prepare it. after learning how to eat it in tahiti, spearing a kala is like spearing lobster. it taste the same…
eating goat fish nitsuke style is the best way. the flavor of japan….
the fun part of diving is catching the fish and eating it. this is eating it “hawaiian style.” you snooze, you lose….

Breaking your Balls….
good morning. one of my dreams was to be able to surf with my nephews. that came true. another was to be able to dive with my nephews. that came true yesterday. free diving is good for surfing, it’s good for the mind, it’s good for the body, and it’s good for the dinner table. what more could you ask for? so when my nephews asked me to take them diving on my boat, i wasn’t going to pass up that opportunity. passing on my knowledge to kids is what i always wanted to do. and to see my nephews grow up so much in one day makes me a happy uncle….
yesterday was such a beautiful day from sunrise to sunset. we dove 11 hours and seen both. hawaii is just amazing…
we dove in waters from 5′ to 100′ deep. i was teaching them how to dive while spearing fish at the same time. can’t beat that. their first dive was 8′ max before they started panicking. by the end of the day, they were free diving 30′ no problem. next north shore session, their confidence level will be a lot higher. we saw sharks, tuna’s, turtles, and all kinds of wildlife. i got great underwater footage until my battery died…..
isaiah broke the ice. there was a small hole leading into a cave that opens on the other side of the reef. you dive down 30′, squeeze in, go under the cave, and pop out on the other side. he kept on trying to go in the hole but was too scared. i kept on pushing him and after he did it, he was really happy. me too. i call it “breaking his balls.” i want to keep pushing these kids to free dive because i believe in it so much. it keeps you healthy and focused. and once your health and focused, you can do anything you want….
imagine watching a little kid go down 30′ deep. it was cute, but cool. to see him kicking like a little baby going down, and to see his big eyes coming up, i couldn’t stop laughing. seth actually speared fish too. of the 4 kids i took today, i bet you at least one, or hopefully all 4 will be a great watermen. i can’t wait until they start spearing enough fish for the whole family….
**josh and gen photos coming tomorrow. took cool video too. stay tuned.
