Mexico Travel Advisory

Every surf trip has risks.  Getting hurt, robbed, lost, kidnapped, or killed is something you always have to think about.  It can happen to anyone at anytime, at anywhere in the world.

Yesterday, I saw the news of these 3 missing surfers in Mexico and usually that’s not good news.  If you go missing in Mexico, something bad happened.  They were on a surf trip, their car was lit on fire, and their tents empty.  Today, they found the dead bodies of the 2 Australians and one American.  Very sad news as something very bad happened.  After I read the article, I scrolled through the comments.  Most saying they were stupid to go to Mexico.  I disagree with that.  As an avid traveler, I believe that these surfers knew the risks and lived their lives to the fullest.  They chose to chase waves and live on the edge.  There is nothing stupid about that.  Terrible things happen in this crazy world we now live in.  What do you do?  Stay home?  Nope, surfers will continue to travel this world and chase waves.  The risks are high, but the rewards are much higher.  These surfers died doing what they loved so you have to respect that.  RIP boys…

Reckless Captain

It was a beautiful morning at Bowls.  Very crowded, not too many waves, but no complaints.  It felt good just to be in the ocean.

Kaimana Beach will be closed for next 7 weeks because a monk seal gave birth to a baby there.  Then today there was a huge monk seal on the beach at Bowls that looked pregnant.  I hope it gives birth on this beach so they close this beach too.  That will definitely keep the crowds away.

I’ve never seen a bigger monk seal than this one.  She must be the Queen of the monk seals.

On the beautiful island of Kauai, this humongous cruise ship came way too close to the shoreline.  I’m surprised it didn’t get stuck on the reef.  What was the captain thinking?   There are a lot of locals that are very upset and they have every right to be.

When a boat tries to turn around and you can see sand stirring up, that means it’s very shallow for that big of a boat.  If that boat got stuck on the reef, that would have been the biggest disaster ever in Hawaiian waters.  I’m pretty sure that captain will soon be unemployed.  Putting thousands of passengers life at risk, and almost an environmental disaster in one of the most beautiful places in the world.  Why risk it?
